Fereneze members David Miller and Roddy McAuley were 2 of 9 Renfrewshire players who triumphed in this years Scottish Area Team Championship. David took over as Team Captain in May (a role previously held by Fereneze legend Gordon Murray) ahead of the first of 3 group matches at Hayston, Greenock and Southerness. The team won all 3 matches to secure their place at last weekend’s finals at Hilton Park where they triumphed over Glasgow (5-4) in the semi final and Angus (6-3) in the final.
As well as Captaining David also played in the match at Southerness (not with much success right enough!!). Roddy on the other hand has had a superb campaign. He’s won 5 out of 6 points and formed a formidable partnership with newly crowned Scottish Amateur champion Kilmacolm’s Alexander Farmer winning their match at Greenock and in Saturday’s semi final. With Alexander missing from the Final he paired up with Greenock’s Paul Dorrian for the 1st time leading out Renfrewshire, to a victory, in the morning foursomes.
Roddy came to the fore in the semi final singles though. Playing against the vastly experienced Gordon Sangster, a well known opponent from the Brand Putter League. Gordon showed his class birdieing the last to force extra holes. Roddy showed his class (and guts) holing out really well on each of the 3 play off holes to eventually seal the win with a par at the 3rd to Gordon’s bogey.
Hopefully not the last success either will have playing and/or managing in this event.
